Mobile hackers a growing menace

With the rise in mobile usage for real world applications, the menace of hackers is also set to increase during 2009. According to latest reports, India added seven million GSM users in November 2008 and this is expected to reach 650 million by 2012.

In an e-mail interview to Business Line, Mr Shantanu Ghosh, Vice-President, India Operations, Symantec, said the menace is set to grow in 2009, primarily because more people are turning towards smart phones that run on operating systems.

“These phones have large amount of money and real world applications similar to a desktop or laptop. As mobile usage continues to grow, so will mobile virus attacks,” he said.

Expanded functions

He pointed out that during 2008 smart phones became the major computing platform. A study by Gartner Research showed that smart phones outshipped laptops in 2007 and analysts predict that one billion mobile devices will hit the market by end of 2011.

As these smart devices increasingly feature expanded bandwidth and functionality, they are being used more like a PC than a phone. Essentially, smart phones are now being used the same way as computers and are accessing the same information.

While the aim of attacks targeting mobile devices are similar to those targeting PCs – to obtain confidential information for financial gain – the propagation methods of smart phone attacks are specific to the mobile platform, said Mr Shantanu.

One type of attack involves use of SMS (text) messages. Since mobile users typically perceive text messages as being more personal than e-mail messages, they are more likely to trust them and act on them.

Other threats, such as snoopware, specifically leverage mobile device functionality, for example by using the phone’s camera to spy on the user, by disabling applications, or sending text messages from the phone without the user’s knowledge.

Symantec also observed viruses spread with Bluetooth transfers, game downloads, and updates to the phone’s system, ringtones, or alerts.

The latest and most sophisticated threats are known as “Pranking4Profit”, where the attack results in theft by accessing premium mobile SMS payments, he added.

Spam trouble

Mr Amit Nath, Country Manager, India and SAARC, Trend Micro, said globally, Mobile Secure Content Management was an estimated $221 million market in 2008. It is expected to grow to $313 million in 2009.

Spam does not spare mobile phones too. For instance, in March 2008, a massive spam attack hit nearly 200 million Chinese mobile phone users – approximately half of China’s total mobile population received unwanted text messages from seven online advertising firms.

Quoting an example, Mr Nath said in early 2008, a malware targeting Windows Mobile PocketPC was found. “Detected as WINCE_INFOJACK.A, this worm specifically runs on Windows CE environment, leaves the mobile phone open to other malware and installs unsigned applications without the user’s consent. It also steals information such as Mobile IMEI or serial number, OS version, model and platform and hosts name which it sends back to the malware author/s. Besides, the malware also changes the security settings of the affected phone,” he said. Mobile phones were infected when using an infected memory card or through SMS.

Mobile phones were infected when an infected memory card was used or through SMS.

According to him, 2009 would see more threats make money out of mobile technologies. As mobile phones and other handheld devices become more interconnected with their desktop counterparts, more threats to attempt to “cross over” multiple machines and devices via common application platforms (e.g., .NET, JAVA, etc.) are to be expected. Because the smart phones today run more like a regular PC, we need to treat them like regular PCs.

Top Five Favorite iPhone Apps

Seattle - The best thing about the iPhone is the wide variety of free and inexpensive add-on applications available for download via the Apple Appstore.

Applications allow the iPhone to have uses beyond the traditional phone calls, SMS messaging, calendar, and notepad applications you expect to have on a mobile phone. Applications can increase your productivity on the go, but the most important function in our opinion is to add a dose of fun to your day. Therefore the applications in our list of favorite iPhone applications all all fun and interesting.

The first in our list is Around Me. This free little app lets checks your gps on the iPhone and gives you a list of all sorts of places that are nearby. You can look under categories such as banks, bar and restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, taxis, etc. For people who travel, this can be invaluable.

Second in the list is an application that may not increase your productivity but its wow factor is so impressive everyone should have it. It’s called Shazam and I do not know how they do it, but you can hold your iPhone up to any music playing and it will “name that tune” and tell you the artist and title. Its simply amazing. We held it up to mysterious Christmas carols playing in a store dressing room and it found the title and artists within a few seconds. You can assuage your curiosity and amaze your friends!

Third and fourth are really silly little applications that just add a bit of fun to your day. The Zippo Lighter is just what you need at your next rock concert. It makes your iPhone look like a Zippo lighter, of course. Perfect for acting like the old days when instead of holding up your cell at a rock concert we used to hold our lighters up. More Cowbell turns your iPhone into a cowbell. Yes, it’s useless but it is a great send up to the classic Saturday Night Live skit and frankly, I’ve got a fever and the only cure is more cowbell.

The fifth application we love is Super Monkey Ball. At $9.99 it’s the only one on the list that is not free. However, Sega’s extremely popular game is the perfect use for the level feature on the iPhone. It allows you to roll the monkey (in a hamster ball) around with an intuitive feel. This game is addictive and might cause you to waste time but it’s quite fun.

LG's SH490 'Make-Up Phone' with high-tech feature

Guess who the SH490 "Make-Up Phone" is looking to sell? If you said "men who wear no makeup," deduct three points and take a nap. Yeah, this Korean domestic flip from LG is pretty glitzy, and as the name implies, fashion is the first priority -- sure, the lid can flash any of 18 emoticons with its LED array, but we wouldn't exactly peg that as a high-tech feature, if you know what we mean. It features video calling and a 3-megapixel cam in your choice of Smoky Red, Deep Blue, and Pearl White, and if you absolutely must have it, expect to pay about 500,000 won ($384) on SK Telecom.

Apple iphone Store gets HP,NPR, USA Today Apps

Apple's App Store continues to be popular with consumers, and it has attracted applications from high-profile organizations such as Hewlett-Packard, National Public Radio, and USA Today.

HP launched an application earlier this week that enables customers to wirelessly print photos from their iPhone or iPod Touch. The first application of its kind, the HP iPrint Photo app currently lets consumers print 4-by-6-inch photos over Wi-Fi networks on HP printers.

The app is fully compatible with Apple's Bonjour technology, as well as the multitouch interface of Apple's devices. It works only with JPEG images, but that could change in the future, HP said.

"Today's news demonstrates how HP is enabling customers to turn special moments captured on the go into high-quality photos," HP executive VP Vyomesh Joshi said in a statement.

Apps with a news focus have received a warm reception, and the App Store is already filled with news apps from the BBC, The New York Times, The Associated Press, and others. NPR and USA Today are the latest news organizations to get on the iPhone.

The free NPR Mobile enables users to browse and stream audio content from NPR's large library. Users can find full-length programs, segments, and programming that isn't available on local stations.

So now even the major giants are competing with each other for releasing apps to apple iphone.Thats the craze iphone has got today.

4 Important things about your mobile phone

There are a few things that can be

done in times of grave emergencies.

Your mobile phone can actually be a

life saver or an emergency tool for survival.

Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST

Emergency

The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112.

If you find yourself out of the coverage area of

your mobile; network and there is an emergency,

dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing

network to establish the emergency number for you,

and interestingly this number 112 can be dialled

even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND

Have you locked your keys in the car?

Does your car have remote keyless entry?

This may come in handy someday.

Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your

keys in the car and the spare keys are at home,

call someone at home on their mobile phone

from your cell phone.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from

your car door and have the person

at your home press the unlock button,

holding it near the mobile phone on their end.

Your car will unlock.

Saves someone from having to

drive your keys to you.

Distance is no object.

You could be hundreds of miles away,

and if you can reach someone who has

the other 'remote' for your car, you can

unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and

it unlocked our car over a mobile phone!'

THIRD

Hidden Battery Power

Imagine your mobile battery is very low.

To activate, press the keys *3370#

Your mobile will restart with this reserve and the

instrument will show a 50% increase in battery..

This reserve will get charged when

you charge your mobile next time.

FOURTH

How to disable a

STOLEN mobile phone?

To check your Mobile phone's serial number,

key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #

A 15 digit code will appear on the screen.

This number is unique to your handset.

Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

When your phone get stolen, you can phone

your service provider and give them this code.

They will then be able to block your handset

so even if the thief changes the SIM card,

your phone will be totally useless.

You probably won't get your phone back,

but at least you know that whoever stole it

can't use/sell it either.

If everybody does this, there would be

no point in people stealing mobile phones.

Mobile viruses: How to Protect your phone?

Mobile phone viruses are the same as computer viruses. It can live with the cellular environment. Viruses can infect one susceptible phone to another. The only solution is to implement security measures inside the device such as data encryption and anti-virus software applications.

Modern technology advances and so are the viruses for smart phones and mobile phones with internet connectivity. Mobile viruses are like human viruses. It can spread by close contact to a specific host. It can also spread in the same way as computer viruses. Mobile viruses can be transferred through infected files or programs.

Some mobile device has Bluetooth. It is a product of modern technology that transfers data. This is done between different devices through photo sending from cell phone to printer and or address transferring from your Windows mobile phone to computers.

Mobile phones evolve. Their purpose was originally to make people talk to each other while moving. Now they are considered as multi-media devices. It can replace items in the future like:

  • game console
  • messaging terminals
  • credit cards
  • digital cameras
  • TV and others

Cell phones that are merely enabled for talking and SMS are not at risk with viruses. Those that are enabled to handle data or have Bluetooth are susceptible to viruses. Bluetooth technology has few risks so it needs to be manipulated properly. Once virus is installed or received, it will start to look for other Bluetooth devices to infect. Within a 30 feet radius, an enabled Bluetooth mobile device can be infected by another.

How do viruses multiply?
Infected MMS messages will be sent by a virus. It will then proliferate to every listed numbers in your phone memory.

What harm virus can do to your phone?
The virus can delete or alter all the contact details and calendar entries in your mobile phone.
It can crash, delete or lock up your phone applications.
The virus will appear as pornographic item, free download, or mobile games.
The virus will appear as text messages disguised as friend messages subject line.

Knowingly or unknowingly, the user installs the virus through transferring. Sometimes the virus disguise as a desirable application. It installs the bug without your knowing. It can cause trouble and cash losses, too.

How to avoid mobile viruses?

  • Do not enable Bluetooth when not needed.
  • Accept only file that you know when your Bluetooth is on.
  • Say No for unknown file.
  • Download materials that are not scanned from sharing network must be avoided.
  • Delete the infected application program.
  • Avoid installing unknown applications.
  • Download only from official websites.

Ways to avoid mobile viruses:
1.Network Security
There are mobile versions of anti-virus products that can be used. These are from industry leaders. It includes:

  • Norton Smartphone Security for Pocket PC
  • F-Secure Mobile Antivirus and
  • Trend Micro Mobile Security-It can protect Windows mobile, Pocket PC, Symbian and Smart phone users
  • Airscanner Anti-virus-It can protect mobile devices and Pocket PC from Trojans
  • Commander Mobile Anti-virus- protects Symbian smart phones

2.Blocking Thieves
An important defense to block thieves of data is to enable the password lock. It can be found in the native system setting of PDA.

3.Privacy and Data Protection
To keep your files confidential, password managers and data encryption can help you.

Encryption applications are:

  • Ilium Softwares eWallet Professional for Windows Mobile
  • Smartphone and
  • palm with 256-bit RC4 encryption

A password for lockbox program will be required each time information is to be accessed. It includes bank account, car details, credit cards, and the like.

Well-known viruses are:

  • Cabir
  • Duts
  • Skull
  • CommWarrior

Viruses and Malware will remain as long as 3G phones are here. Improvement of the productivity levels of mobile devices will expose them more to virus infections. The solution is to implement security measures inside the device such as data encryption and anti-virus software applications.

Skyfire Full mobile browser better than iphone browser

Throw out that WAP browser on your cell phone. We are quickly approaching a point where a full browser experience is available on our mobile devices. A startup called Skyfire is in some respect even further along than Apple in bringing the entire Web to your phone. Its mobile browser lets you slide Web pages around and zoom in like with the mobile version of Safari. But it also supports Flash and Ajax sites. (It does this by offloading most of the heavy lifting to its servers rather than the mobile client). That means you can watch Youtube videos and go to Google Maps right in the mobile browser instead of having to download separate apps. In contrast, the iPhone’s Safari browser still does not support Flash and so to watch a video you have to launch the separate Youtube app.
As it becomes possible to do more and more inside the mobile browser itself, it raises the question of whether that indeed is the killer app for mobile Web phones. For the most part, you still get a richer experience by downloading a separate single-purpose app to your phone. But efforts like Skyfire’s point to a future where that may no longer be necessary for all but the most sophisticated apps and games.

Samsung's Google Android Phone to release next year

Samsung will roll out a mobile phone based on the Google Android operating system by the second quarter of 2009, according to a report from Korean news agency ETNews. While details are sketchy, Samsung will reportedly release the phone via cellular carriers Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile. The phone will likely be a touchscreen model similar to Samsung's Instinct and Omnia handsets, both of which more closely resemble the Apple iPhone than HTC's less sleek T-Mobile G1, currently the only Google Android phone on the market.

Samsung's device will provide all the Google essentials we'd expect, include search, mapping, mail, and instant messaging, the report states, but it's a safe bet that other Google tools will be added as well. It would appear that Samsung has high hopes for its Google phone. It has reportedly "accelerated" development of the project, adding 30 Linux and Java experts to a design team that now has up to 80 members. It seems likely that Samsung will beat other Open Handset Alliance members to market, including Asus, LG, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson, all of whom have Android-based projects in the works.

The growing interest in the Android OS, as well as the staggering popularity of the iPhone, which now commands over 30 percent of the U.S. smartphone market, is more bad news for Microsoft's Windows Mobile, which is declining in popularity among end users and phone manufacturers alike. Let's hope the Samsung handset will borrow some of the iPhone's elegance, but a slide-out keyboard would be nice too.

Sony Ericsson Xmini Walkman Small Phone

There is definitely some push in the marketplace toward high-powered smartphones and this has pushed us toward slightly larger handsets. People are willing to carry around something that is a little bulkier if it means that the phone can do a lot more than just voice calls. However, there are still people that want their handsets to be as small and pocket-friendly as possible. That's where something like the Xmini would come in play.

While in its closed position, the Sony Ericsson Xmini mobile phone could easily be mistaken for one of Sony's small personal media players. As its name quite clearly implies, the biggest selling point of the Xmini is its diminutive stature. This phone is freaking tiny!

No, you're not going to get any high-end features or crazy high-resolution cameras, but you do get full access to Sony Ericsson's Walkman functionality as well as some nice touch-sensitive controls on the face. The slider phone boasts a 1.8-inch QVGA TFT display, clear stereo sound, Bluetooth, 4GB internal memory, and email support.

Based on some of the provided promotional pictures, I can see that the Sony Ericsson Xmini will be available in a wide assortment of colors. In addition to the standard black and white variants, Sony Ericsson will be offering palettes that nclude blue, green, purple, pink and more. Personally, I think I like the black model the best.

Unfortunately for anyone outside of Nippon, the Sony Ericsson Xmini Walkman phone appears to be launching exclusively through KDDI Japan, so don't expect to find the CDMA handset anywhere else anytime soon.

LG Unveil Chips For 4G Phones

Faster cellphones based on 4G wireless technology are set to become a reality soon. LG has developed the first handset modem chip based on 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology standard, a move the company says is a significant step towards creating a market-ready 4G phone.

LG’s latest 13 mm x 13 mm modem chip can theoretically support wireless download speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 50 Mbps. T

“The modem chip is the most crucial component required to create a viable 4G handset with LTE technology, the leading candidate to become the fourth generation mobile phone technology standard,” said LG in a statement.

LG showed the the chip at its research lab in Korea with real world wireless download speeds of 60 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps. The fastest phones currently on the market use HSDPA technology and download at a maximum speed of 7.6 Mbps, said LG.

That means with LTE technology, users can download a 700 MB movie file in less than one minute at the theoretical speed of 100 Mbps. LTE technology would also allow consumers to simultaneously stream four HD movies without any buffering, said the company.

Expect the first LTE mobile phones to hit the market in 2010.

mobiExplore - mobile phone travel guide

A few weeks ago Gideon Multimedia launched a travel guide for mobile phones, called mobiEXPLORE UK. The idea is that it marries the portability of a guide book, but the always-on and always updated aspects of the web. With mobiEXPLORE UK on your phone you can have access to the most current information wherever you are and whenever you need it.

It’s easy to for users to download:

Go to http://uk.mobiexplore.com/ on your computer and follow the three steps on the screen
Or go to www.mobiexplore.net on you mobile phone and click on the link – this will give you the option to download the application there and then without the need for a PC
There is also the option to download the application via an SMS request

And it’s proving to be very popular – in the first 3 weeks since launch, it had been downloaded over 70,000 times.

I asked the European MD of Gideon Multimedia, Vedran Prazen, a few questions about the service:

What cities does it cover?
MobiEXPLRE UK covers over 100 locations across the UK, including London, Manchester and Edinburgh, offering insight into points of interest, local history and facts about the area. For the most popular locations (for example, London and Manchester) you will find more in-depth information including an easy to navigate street map, tube map (for London), information on places of interest such as museums, nature, shopping and spas along with restaurant and accommodations listings.

Is it as detailed as a ‘Rough Guide’ for example?
MobiEXPLORE UK is a mobile application and as such the content has been tailored for mobile use – it would be a bad move to try and squeeze the content of a book onto your mobile phone! But because the application fuses offline and online content users can access restaurants listings offline – and still have the option of receiving up to the minute weather forecasts, news and special offers by going online – something a guidebook is unable to do.

Could my mum use it?
Sure – we designed the application with this audience in mind … if the typical, non-techy Mum can download and use the application with ease then we know we’ve done a good job.

What do you think is the future of mobile applications?
If we are talking features, then essentially the only limit is one’s imagination.

In terms of business models I think the future of mobile applications mirrors that adopted by mobiEXPLORE. Free to the end user but supported by targeted, non intrusive adds and additional services. The key to a successful application is making it useful and relevant – what does it offer and why should people want it? These are the boxes that need to be ticked and this is where I believe the future of mobile applications lies.

Have you got anything else in the pipeline?
Absolutely – the next step for us the ten other mobiEXPLORE projects in Europe along with several other mobile services that are in the very early stages of development…so we are certainly keeping busy!

Sony Ericsson W760i mobile Review

THE GOOD: Looks good with a sturdy feel and easy to navigate through MP3 music tracks.

THE BAD: Screen too small, bulky feel and small memory.

The Sony Ericsson W760i is another solid Walkman phone from the manufacturer that is well known for its music handsets. This is just one of many high-end handsets currently being released, which may explain why the panel is under-whelmed by the W760i. The device has a 3.2-megapixel camera, which is up from the two megapixels offered by its predecessor, the W580i. However, other than the camera, there are few stand-out features. The Phones 4u salesman says: ‘I’m a little unimpressed if I’m honest. It is essentially a W580i with a better camera.’ The T-Mobile salesman says: ‘It is just a standard Sony Ericsson music phone.’

The O2 saleswoman is the least enthusiastic: ‘I wouldn’t say it’s better than any of the Sony Ericssons on offer and it’s not selling; people are just going for the W980.’ However, Sutton springs to the handset’s defence. He says: ‘It is the only manufacturer to offer a comprehensive range; there’s something for everyone. A lot of Sony Ericsson handsets aren’t very innovative but the W760i is another phone that works well.’ The O2 saleswoman believes that the improved 3.2-megapixel camera is the handset’s only selling point. She says: ‘It’s the only reason it is any good.’ Sutton thinks that the motion-sensitive feature is also a selling point, as it allows the user to control volume and change track by moving the phone.

He says: ‘Motion sensitivity is a gimmick, but before cameras were added to mobiles we didn’t know if that would take off either.’ Opinion is split on the appearance of the W760i. The T-Mobile salesman says: ‘It would be better if it was less plastic and a little thinner.’ The O2 saleswoman agrees: ‘It is far too bulky and a bit of a man’s phone.’ But Sutton disagrees: ‘I don’t think it’s too big, and it will appeal to both men and women.’ The O2 saleswoman claims that she had performance issues with the device: ‘We’ve had a couple returned.’ Overall, with the exception of Sutton, the panel is not won over by the W760i. The Phones 4u salesman says: ‘It’s nothing special but we’ve had no complaints,’ and the O2 saleswoman calls it ‘very plain’. The T-Mobile salesman says: ‘It’s OK,’ and Sutton says: ‘It’s a good budget phone.

The very recently released Sony Ericsson W350i is the latest to feature in the special edition phone series.Sony Ericsson is all set to launch some ultra-cool Sex and the City special edition W350i phones.

Fabricated keeping the modern woman in mind, the Sony Ericsson W350i Sex and the City edition phone is dressed in a neat Ivory White finish.
