Sony Ericsson W760i mobile Review

THE GOOD: Looks good with a sturdy feel and easy to navigate through MP3 music tracks.

THE BAD: Screen too small, bulky feel and small memory.

The Sony Ericsson W760i is another solid Walkman phone from the manufacturer that is well known for its music handsets. This is just one of many high-end handsets currently being released, which may explain why the panel is under-whelmed by the W760i. The device has a 3.2-megapixel camera, which is up from the two megapixels offered by its predecessor, the W580i. However, other than the camera, there are few stand-out features. The Phones 4u salesman says: ‘I’m a little unimpressed if I’m honest. It is essentially a W580i with a better camera.’ The T-Mobile salesman says: ‘It is just a standard Sony Ericsson music phone.’

The O2 saleswoman is the least enthusiastic: ‘I wouldn’t say it’s better than any of the Sony Ericssons on offer and it’s not selling; people are just going for the W980.’ However, Sutton springs to the handset’s defence. He says: ‘It is the only manufacturer to offer a comprehensive range; there’s something for everyone. A lot of Sony Ericsson handsets aren’t very innovative but the W760i is another phone that works well.’ The O2 saleswoman believes that the improved 3.2-megapixel camera is the handset’s only selling point. She says: ‘It’s the only reason it is any good.’ Sutton thinks that the motion-sensitive feature is also a selling point, as it allows the user to control volume and change track by moving the phone.

He says: ‘Motion sensitivity is a gimmick, but before cameras were added to mobiles we didn’t know if that would take off either.’ Opinion is split on the appearance of the W760i. The T-Mobile salesman says: ‘It would be better if it was less plastic and a little thinner.’ The O2 saleswoman agrees: ‘It is far too bulky and a bit of a man’s phone.’ But Sutton disagrees: ‘I don’t think it’s too big, and it will appeal to both men and women.’ The O2 saleswoman claims that she had performance issues with the device: ‘We’ve had a couple returned.’ Overall, with the exception of Sutton, the panel is not won over by the W760i. The Phones 4u salesman says: ‘It’s nothing special but we’ve had no complaints,’ and the O2 saleswoman calls it ‘very plain’. The T-Mobile salesman says: ‘It’s OK,’ and Sutton says: ‘It’s a good budget phone.

New mobile broadband package by Virgin Media

In a final push to get more users online Virgin Media has become the final mobile provider of the six biggest operators in the UK to launch its own mobile broadband package.

After recent news that more than twelve IT and mobile companies had teamed up in an attempt to promote mobile broadband by releasing an “out of the box” laptop device that would allow user to connect straight away, Virgin has now launch its own service that will cost users £15 per month.

The broadband mark that can be issued to any device that can access the mobile broadband network as soon as the user buys it has been created by the combination of the mobile industry trade group GSM Association and big company names like Microsoft, Dell, Toshiba, Ericsson, Vodafone, and T-Mobile.

With the backing of a $1bn (£562m) advertising budget worldwide the first of these mobile broadband ready notebook computers will be available in 91 countries globally and will allow users to turn on their systems and access the web straight from the box.
The rising interest in WiMax, which is a technology that directly rivals mobile broadband, is the reason for this bold move in the mobile broadband world and while WiMax isn’t a popular option in Europe there are a number of major cities in the US that are currently rolling this service out.

Another concern for the mobile broadband providers is that WiMax may be competing directly with LTE, the next generation of mobile broadband technology. A WiMax venture released earlier this year by Sprint, the US mobile phone company and Clearwire, a rival communications company has had heavy investments of $500m from Google. Another of Google’s slightly smaller wireless broadband services has been created by Google and is named wifi and is available in its home town of Mountain View in California for free.

Mobile broadband users who use Virgin Media, which currently makes use of T-Mobiles mobile phone network for its services, will get 3GB worth of data downloads each month and a free USB modem that they can plug into a laptop as long as they sign up to an 18 month agreement charging £15 per month for its mobile broadband access. There have recently been concerns raised that with the sudden surge in interest in mobile broadband access that many mobile networks will become seriously congested as more and more customers use the network for large amounts of data downloads or lengthy access to the internet.

Sony Ericsson C905 8MP Camera mobile

Sony Ericsson is launching another cameraphone, but this one with a whopping 8MP camera. As it is a cellphone with both productivity and media features, it is really a plus that such a high resolution digital camera is added to the mix.

First and foremost is the wonderful 8MP camera that comes with the Sony Ericsson C905. Receiving the high resolution means we can truly leave our daily digital camera at home while out on the town, down at the beach, or at a family outing. In addition, it comes with some great features that could be beneficial for any photographer, from beginner to advanced. For example, it come with an image stabilizer, auto focus and face detection of up to three faces. Moreover, the C905 consists of 16X digital zoom, a large sized mirror to take pictures of your beautiful face, and an advanced flash lamp.

Now no cameraphone would be complete without the ability for great quality video recording, and the Sony Ericsson C905 provides that for its users as well. With the 2.4″ screen, it is easy to take a look at your video subjects and make the video worthwhile. Furthermore, a second flash grants the ability to record well at night, and the Wifi capability makes transferring of videos as well as photos an easy task.

The Sony C905 Cellphone also arrives with GPS built in. Besides the obvious use of this GPS for directions to your favorite locations, it allows for Social Tagging of your photos and always knowing where they were taken. If you happened to leave on a long trip and taken numerous photos, you would not need to remember the exact spots, for the Sony Ericsson C905 feature will remember for you.
Additional features we could not really be without once we are used to them are the Wifi connectivity, media player for our music, large capacity for storage of music, photos, and videos (up to 32 GB with external card), FM Radio, and a strong battery (up to 9 hours talk time and 380 hours standby).

Last but not least is the comfortable and beautiful design of the C905 cellphone. As can be seen in this pictures from Phones4u, it is a great looking Sony Ericsson that keeps up with the adjacent cellphones out right now. It does claim it is a bit heavier that we would like, but then again…it is better than taking an additional digital camera with us.

The Sony Ericsson C905 8MP cellphone is to be available in the UK in October of 2008.

SanDisk 16 GB Flash Storage Phone Cards

SanDisk claims its new flash storage cards offer the world's largest data capacity for mobile phones. The MicroSDHC (SD High Capacity) and Memory Stick Micro mobile memory cards also can used in video cameras, GPS receivers or MP3 players and will cost $100 to $129 each.

Flash memory and storage device provider SanDisk said Sept. 29 that it will soon bring to market the world's largest removable storage capacity for mobile phones—16GB MicroSDHC (SD High Capacity) and Memory Stick Micro mobile memory cards.

Best Buy Mobile and Verizon Wireless stores will be the first major retail outlets in the United States to carry the 16GB-capacity cards, SanDisk said. Stores will have them on shelves beginning in October and November.

SanDisk, the object of a recent proposed buyout by Samsung—with Japan's Toshiba also being a possible suitor—said the new memory cards also can be utilized in several other applications besides mobile phones. They can be put to work in video cameras, GPS receivers or MP3 players with MicroSD slots, such as SanDisk's Sansa players.

The fingernail-sized 16GB memory cards allow consumers to "wake up" previously unused or little-used storage-intensive features offered by portable handsets, such as music and video playback, high-definition digital camera functions, gaming and GPS applications, the company said.

The larger capacity should be welcome news for users of those heavy-duty applications, said industry analyst Avi Greengart, research director for mobile devices at Current Analysis.

"Handsets have become far more than just phones; they've become mobile jukeboxes, mobile offices, even mobile movie theaters," Greengart said. "Flash memory cards have increased in storage capacity, but even an 8GB card may be too small for anyone with GPS map data, a few movies, a game or two, a presentation file and other applications. There is an acute need for more mobile storage capacity. 16GB gives consumers the ability to carry their digital content with them and still have room to do more with their mobile phones."

MicroSD cards are designed for slot-equipped legacy mobile phones and can hold a maximum capacity of 2GB. Current MicroSDHC cards are available in 4GB and 8GB.

The Memory Stick Micro cards are designed for Sony Ericsson's new generation of mobile phones, all of which are compatible with the 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacity levels. SanDisk's 16GB mobile memory cards come with a five-year limited warranty.

The 16GB MicroSDHC card will be priced at $99.99 retail; the 16GB M2 card will have a price of $129.99. The 16GB-capacity cards will be available at Best Buy Mobile stores in October and Verizon Wireless stores in November, SanDisk said.
