Recession hits mobile-phone market

The global recession is hitting the handset market hard, as the biggest supplier in the market, Nokia, is seeing its sales plunge.

The Finnish handset maker said Thursday that fourth-quarter sales dropped 19 percent to $16.5 billion compared with the same period a year earlier. And its profit fell about 69 percent.

Nokia had warned investors in November and December that sales volumes were going to be lower than expected, but the magnitude of the decline still came as a big surprise to most investors. Sales were hit not just at the high end, but also at the low end, where Nokia has driven much of its profits the last several quarters.

At the high end, the company lost market share to Apple with its iPhone and Research In Motion with its BlackBerry devices. But the company also felt the slowdown in developing markets, where it has provided low-cost phones. Even in China, Nokia's largest handset market, the company sold 36 percent fewer devices during the fourth quarter than the same period a year ago. And sales were down 23 percent in the Middle East and Africa.

CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo explained that the weak economy forced many distributors and retail outlets to sell excess inventory instead of ordering new devices from the manufacturer. But he said as inventory is sold, he expects sales to pick up later in 2009.

Nokia's dismal earnings are likely a harbinger of problems that face handset markers in 2009. Nokia has for many quarters been the strongest cell phone maker in the market. It has dominated both at the high end and at the low end of the market. But Kallasvuo said the overall market is weak now because of the poor economic conditions around the world. And he expects the overall handset market to be down 10 percent in 2009.

The fact that Nokia is now struggling to get people to buy new phones, means it will likely be even harder for its weaker competitors, such as Motorola and Sony Ericsson. Last week, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, a joint venture formed between Sweden's Ericsson and Japan's Sony, reported a loss of $243 million for the fourth quarter. Motorola was already struggling before the economy took a sharp nosedive. And the overall outlook for the industry will certainly hurt it most severely as the company is not expected to come out with any exciting phones until 2010.

Nokia is in far better shape than these other companies. And it will surely weather the current economic storm. But the question is how badly will it get beaten up in the process? The smartphone category of handsets is where most of the growth will likely come from in the coming year. But it is precisely this market, where Nokia faces the stiffest competition from Apple and RIM.

Nokia says it has products in the pipeline that will compete in this category. It has the 5800 Xpress Music phone, which has a touch screen and offers multimedia functionality. It also plans to launch the N97, which will also have a touch screen and a slide-out keypad.

Even with new devices, Kallasvuo acknowledged the company will have to make significant cutbacks. Specifically, it plans to reduce annual costs in its devices and services operations by more than $900 million by the end of 2010. The cost cutting will no doubt result in job cuts, Kallasvuo said. But he didn't say how many jobs would be lost.

Barack Obama Mobile Phone Launched

The first ever Obama-branded mobile phone is called Mi-Obama and it was recently launched, not in the US, how people would’ve expected, but in Kenya – the country where Obama’s father was born.

Mi-Obama is produced and sold by Mi-Fone, a company that you’ve probably never heard of. That’s because it’s only present in some Asian and African markets.

The phone is a candybar that has “Omaba” written on the back case, as well as the US Presitdent’s famous “Yes we can”. Apparently, the reason behind its launch is the fact that the new President of the USA will visit Kenya sometime in the future.

As for the specs of Mi-Obama, these are the ones of an entry-level device, including a 128 x 128 pixels display, FM radio and a Led torchlight.

If you’re in Kenya, you can find the Mi-Obama via the following retail stores: Xpress@ Nakumatt, Phonelink and Tuskys. Its price is of only $30.

Mobile phones can find your friends now

MOBILE phones that can tell you where your friends are, warn you if it is going to rain and advise if it is worth waiting for the bus will be on sale within a year – developed by Scottish scientists.
Users will simply have to wave the mobile phone in the air to get information about the world around them, as the next generation of phones adopt the technology of the Nintendo Wii to make them easier to use than ever.

Professor Roderick Murray-Smith of the University of Glasgow, who is working for Nokia on the point-and-find software, has already created prototypes of the "magic wand" phones, and he predicts they will be on the shelves by next Christmas.

While the basic technology is already in iPhones and some Nokia handsets, the computer scientist is developing a host of applications to help people access information from the world wide web in the real world.

Murray-Smith said: "We are working on linking people on to the world wide web in the real world, so they can use social networking sites to locate their friends in the real world, or point their phone at a building or a bus stop and find out the right information."

LG Sells 5 Million Viewty Mobile Phones

LG Electronics, the world's fourth-biggest mobile phone maker, said Sunday sales of its strategic touch-based "Viewty" mobile phones surpassed the five million mark. Viewty made its debut in October 2007.

LG officials attributed sales to impressive performances in its key European and North American markets. LG sold 2.6 million Viewty units in Europe during the period.

"Sales have reached 4.65 million and 350,000 in overseas and local markets, respectively, thus far," spokesman Park Seung-koo said, Sunday.

Park, however, declined to give details on Viewty sales in North America.

Viewty was introduced to the local market in December 2007.

LG is tasked with making specific models into hit items on the global market, as brand image is a major necessity of the company.

To find a breakthrough amid sagging momentum in the developed but saturated North American and European markets, LG plans to enter the low-end handset market in the first half of this year, to compete with bigger rivals such as Nokia in emerging markets.

LG has targeted single-digit profit growth in the less-pricey segment within a few years.

The company aims to introduce a mid-tier key flagship model with a sales target of over 10 million this year. Its mobile chief, Ahn Seung-kwon, recently said his division is now increasing its number of outlets, with improved product images.

"We will be more aggressive, albeit selectively, in marketing our key strategic models, to maintain the premium image on our products and to increase the likelihood of success in the low-tier market," another LG spokesman said.

LG is forecast to have 300 billion won in operating profits in the fourth quarter due to decreased demand for consumer electronics products amid the global downturn, according to estimates by brokerages.

In the third quarter, LG shipped 23 million handsets globally, thanks to high sales of the Viewty and Secret models.

LG is expected to have achieved its annual target of 100 million handsets last year, compared with 80.5 million in 2007.
