Amazon may relaunch their mobile phones

Amazon Ice Phone
As per the latest leaks from India, Amazon is working on a new smartphone which will be launched later in this year. Two years ago, Jeff Bezos put an end (temporary) to the Amazon mobile phones. However, in spite of the Fire Phone mishap which led the distributor to 170 million net losses, almost the whole stock of Fire Phone is laying in its warehouses, but the boss of the group has always maintained that there will be a sequel one day to this product in another form or under another name and this failure was only one step.

According to the leak which cites several sources close to the file, the next step would be scheduled for 2017. The project would be called internally "ICE", certainly in connection with the Fire Phone. And it will launch one or more phones, depending on the feedback of the partners and the opportunities. These phones are not meant for mature markets, but for emerging countries, notably India and Russia.

This smartphone (or these smartphones) would work on Android like the Fire Phone, but not on the customized version. This will be the standardized version, with all the services of Google, Gmail, and the Play Store included. The size may measure between 5.2 inches and 5.5 inches. This screen would be accompanied by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 chipset, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, a 13-megapixel photo sensor, a fingerprint reader located on the back and Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Google Assistant. The price of the phone would be around 100 USD. Surprisingly, while many manufacturers have developed a personal assistant, Amazon's smartphone will not integrate its in-house application, Alexa.

The fact that Amazon wants to revive itself in the mobile business is not surprising in itself. Many brands believe that being present in the smartphone market provides more visibility to the consumers which is well worth when compared with the losses it generates.

Obviously just like you, we do not have the answer to many questions. First, why focus on India where its products like Fire Tablet, Alexa are not available, where competitive pressure is mounting significantly and where Amazon's competitors (Flipkart, for example) are particularly well established? And India is a market where the rules to sell a smartphone are not very simple. And why use the main branch of Android when Amazon has long been working on its own ROM? Finally, why they offer a mobile without Amazon applications like Amazon AppStore or Alexa?  Time will only answer all these questions.

Qualcomm Introduces Quick Charge 4+, Enhanced Version of Quick Charge

quick charge 4.0

Just six months ago, Qualcomm introduced the fourth generation of its fast charging technology, Quick Charge 4.0. And now the Californian founder is already back to the load with an updated version labeled "4+". What are the features?

Last November, Qualcomm introduced the new version of its fast charging technology called Quick Charge. This version numbered 4.0, is compatible with the Snapdragon 630, the Snapdragon 660 and the Snapdragon 835. It is used to shorten the charge time of a battery (up to 50% of the charge in 15 minutes). Today, Qualcomm is already presenting a first evolution, which is not "important enough" to justify switching to version 5.0, but which still provides some additional options for protection and use. It's called Quick Charge 4+.

The first point of differentiation: performance. QC4 + offers better performance than QC4: 3 °C less at chassis level (more safety), 30% more efficient (less energy and heat losses) and 15% faster. In short, it is even better than before. Qualcomm has in fact installed new thermal sensors to measure the load not only on the shell but also on the USB connector. This makes it possible to modulate the load according to the risks of overheating.

Another novelty of QC4 + is Dual Charge. This is the association of two coprocessors for managing the load. With this, Quick Charge 4+ is able to split the electrical current received by the USB connector in two, to distribute the load and therefore the heat emission that it entails, while reducing the charging time. This capacity to split the electric current is not fixed: it is modulated according to the needs. If a load path emits too much heat, QC4 + can dynamically reduce the current (or divert it to the parallel path) while waiting for a return to normal.

Another interesting improvement: backward compatibility. Thanks to QC4 +, a user of a QC2 or QC3 compatible charger can benefit from it. This was not always the case, whether with Quick Charge or with alternative solutions, such as Turbo Charge of OnePlus.

Quick Charge 4+ is compatible with the Snapdragon 835. And more precisely with all the smartphones under Snapdragon 835 that will have bothered to integrate two coprocessors of power management. High-end mobiles like Xperia XZ, the Galaxy S8 (US version), the HTC U11 are already coming up with Snapdragon 835 and hence Quick Charge 4+ compatible.
